Creating a Character

CHARACTER BACKGROUND

You character has a homeplace somewhere. He has a specific subrace (even for Humans) that dictates to a certain extent how he or she looks (tendency for blonde hair, green eyes, etc.) Your character will also tend to dress a certain way, although this can change. Your character may also view things a little differently (thievery is an honorable profession in some places). The character's homeland will also determine what other rumors, legends, and histories he/she knows. Some places have never even seen horses! (The Kathnyri Empire is a good example of this.)

You are free to choose your character's homeland, financial status, family (if any), have it assigned by the DM (for some reason, players prefer this...), or you may use any of the charts provided below. These tables are entirely voluntary - they are provided for your convenience.

Table 6. Family Marital Status

Table 7. Siblings
Roll twice to find number of surviving siblings. The first number is the number of siblings who were born. The second number is the number of siblings who are still alive. If second roll is greater than first, all siblings are still living.

Race Modifier Die Roll Result Race Die Roll
Ci’thas +50% 10 or less Parents were slaves/prisoners. Unmarried. Ci’thas 1d6-1
Darklander +10% 11-15 Parents were slaves/prisoners. Married. Darklander 1d4-1

Kozakuran +25% Kozakuran 1d8-1
Tatheari * Mraas 1d8-1
Thri-kreen +8% Tatheari 1d4-1
Thri-kreen 1-10****

* All Tatheari come from Halash’kar. 70% chance parents were not married.

**Illdarin do not practice marriage in a way anyone who is not Illithid/ Illdarin can understand. The closest approximation is that they take temporary mates, but once the children are able to leave the breeding pool, the pair go their separate ways.

***Family ties are very weak among the Illdarin. There might be one or two siblings the character has formed an attachment to, but this is uncommon.

****Thri-kreen have clutch-mates. They regard clutch-mates as brothers and sisters, whether or not there is an actual blood relation. Loyalty among clutch-mates is second only to the hive queen. Actual number of related siblings is only 0-3.

Table 8. Family Relations

Race Modifier Race Modifier Die Roll Result
Ci’thas +12% Half-Ogre -15% 10 or less Extreme Hatred
Darklander +6% Half-Orc -10% 11-20 Hatred
Draccaean -8% Halfling No modifier 21-25 Avoidance

Elf +20% Tatheari +5% 81-120 Very Loving
Gnome +5% Thri-kreen -10%
Half-Elf +8%

*Illdarin apply this +20% or -20% towards a Neutral relationship with any family member. All results are subject to DM approval.

Extreme Hatred. Person has extreme hatred for your character and will try to kill the character if given the opportunity. This probably results from some wrong comitted when they were growing up (such as attempted murder). Help from these family members will be very rare, at best.

Hatred. Person hates your character. Probably results from some wrong done in the fairly recent past (you were both competing for the same girl - this person lost). Help can come from this family member, but will be geared towards never seeing the character again.

Avoidance. This person avoids your character. May be because your character is in disgrace, wanted as a criminal, or you know some deep dark secret about this person. Roll on this table again, with no modifiers, for each individual family member.

Neutral. This person doesn’t care one way or the other about your character. Very good chance of a "spoiled baby" in the family -- definitely not your character. Getting aid from this family member will be like getting aid from any NPC.

Liking. Family member likes your character. May view your character as a father/mother figure. Love is there, but is more of a friendly kind. Family reactions will be at +1 on a d20.

Good. Relations with this family member are good. He/she is supportive and loving. All reactions with this person will be at +3 on a d20.

Very Loving. Family member would willingly give his/her life for your character. Good possibility that character is a "spoiled baby."

Table 9. Handedness

%Roll Effect
01-70 Right Handed
71-00 Left Handed

Being left-handed is a good thing in a fight. For the first couple of rounds, a left-hander will have a bonus (+1) to hit until his opponent learns to adjust. This may not always be the case with some opponents.

Note:Ambidexterity is now a feat under 3rd Edition. Some races, such as Drow, may get the ambidexterity feat as a special bonus.
